Mini solar systems in 2023: VAT no longer applies to balcony power plants
Balcony power plants are enjoying great popularity due to rising electricity prices. Anyone who hasn’t bought it yet will have another reason in 2023 to buy a plug-in mini solar system. In 2023 there will be no VAT, so you can save 19 percent.
In 2023, the purchase of solar systems will be tax-free
Good news for everyone who wants to buy a solar system in 2023. From 2023, VAT will no longer apply if you buy a solar system. Sellers can from then on no longer levy sales tax at 19 percentso that you get the hardware for a mini solar system or a balcony power plant without VAT.
Sample calculation for a 600 watt balcony power plant:
- Until December 31, 2022: Balcony power plant costs 800 euros including 19 percent VAT.
- From January 1st, 2023: Balcony power plant costs 672 euros without VAT.
In this specific case, you would save 128 euros when buying, which you would then no longer have to generate through the operation. Your balcony power plant would therefore pay for itself much earlier and you would make a profit much earlier. Based on my savings with a 600 watt solar system, that would be a year earlier. With rising electricity prices, the purchase would be worthwhile even earlier.
Will retailers pass on the price reduction?
That’s the big question that won’t be answered until 2023. The dealers lose nothing because they have to pass on the sales tax to the state anyway. But it could definitely come to deadweight effects, because more people are interested in a balcony power plant due to the tax breaks. In any case, we will keep an eye on the price development.

Local subsidies for balcony power plants
Before purchasing a mini solar system, you should also find out whether your city, region or state offers subsidies. Sometimes you can skim several hundred euros. However, these are mostly local offers that are not yet widespread. Either way, buying a mini solar system is worthwhile if you have the opportunity to set it up and connect it. Due to the elimination of VAT, there is now a lot more than before anyway.
