This is how you use Face ID from your iPhone with a mouth cap
Unlock your iPhone with Face ID, even if you’re wearing a face mask? This is possible with a new function, although you do need an Apple Watch for it.

Using Face ID with a mouth cap
Face masks have been a permanent part of the street scene for over a year and a half, and will remain so for a while. Annoying for people with an iPhone with Face ID, who now have to enter their PIN code because the camera does not recognize the face.
That’s why Apple added a feature in iOS 14.5 to recognize faces with masks using an Apple Watch. It must be running on watchOS 7.4 or newer to work. You must also have a number code set on your Apple Watch. Then follow the steps below to activate the function:

- Open the Settings app;
- Go to ‘Face ID and access code’;
- Enter your access code;
- Under ‘Unlock with Apple Watch’, activate the switch behind ‘Apple Watch from [naam]’.
This is how Face ID works with a mouth cap
After going through the steps above, Face ID works as follows. As soon as you pick up your iPhone, the camera will scan your face. If the device sees that you are wearing a face mask, your Apple Watch is activated. Do you have it on and is it unlocked? Then the iPhone will be unlocked as if you were using Face ID. A message will appear on the screen of your Watch that your iPhone has been successfully opened.
To unlock your iPhone with your smartwatch, you need an Apple Watch Series 3 or newer. The latest watch from Apple is the Apple Watch Series 7. In addition, Apple sells the Apple Watch SE, which lacks some functions, but is a lot cheaper.
