At the start of the game you are dealt two cards and during the game another five are dealt. The aim is therefore to make the best possible combination of a total of five cards. You use the two cards in your hand and the five cards on the table, so there are two cards that are not involved. Such a combination is called a poker hand and the better the combination, the higher the chance that you will win. Below we show you the different possibilities you can create with the cards that go from high to low score.

royal flush:

Five consecutive cards of the same suit, with the ace as the highest card. For example: A♠ K♠ Q♠ J♠ 10♠.

Straight flush:

Five consecutive cards of the same suit. For example: Q♦ J♦ 10♦ 9♦ 8♦

four of a kind:

high card:

Also known as No pair or high. The highest card counts, with two as the lowest and Ace as the highest card. In this example, the hand is “Ace high” or “Ace High”. For example: A♦ 10♦ 9♠ 5♣ 4♣

To stake

Part of the game is betting chips. The first time to bet is when you have received your first two cards. There is a mandatory bet for two players per round, which they call the ‘blinds’. The big blind that pays the most and to the right of him or her is the small blind. When the blinds are 10/20, the big blind is required to bet 20 and the small blind 10. Other players wishing to join must equalize the big blind bet. They can also discard the cards and then they are no longer in the game. The player to the right of the small blind is the dealer. Also known as the button, the dealer moves up one spot each round, just like the blinds.

This is how the game goes

We have already mentioned above that as a player you are dealt two cards and that after that five cards in total are placed on the table. That doesn’t happen in one go.

After you’ve dealt your two cards, three cards are dealt to the table, they call it the ‘flop’. This gives you a first insight into your chances and you can bet your number of chips.

After everyone has placed their bets, another card follows, which is called the ‘turn’. Again you will see if your chances of a ‘good hand’ have increased or decreased. You can then increase your bet if necessary.

Finally, the ‘river’ follows and that is the last card that comes on the table. This is the last time you can do anything with your bet. Because after this follows the ‘show down’ and the player with the best combination will be able to draw the entire bet.

How can I win?

As we wrote before, the game ends with a showdown, the moment when the cards are placed on the table, but there is still a lot to do before that. Poker is a game in which you have to master various things and where you are not only dependent on the cards you get.

It is important that you not only keep an eye on the cards but also your fellow players. First you see some of the cards from the game in your hand and on the table, with that you can calculate the chance that others can also have a good hand, the more aces you have, the less chance that someone else she has.

In addition, you also have to ‘read’ your opponent, as with many sports, the body position or face can reveal a lot about the odds of your opponents. If you see a depressed smile, Karel may have a good hand on the other side and you have to watch what you bet! Incidentally, you can also learn a lot from the size of the bets about the trust of your opponents in the cards.

Bluffing is an important part of the poker game. By bluffing you can use your bets to make the opponent think that you have a very good hand. Here you hope that one or more opponents do not dare to take the risk of losing and ‘fold’. This means they put the cards on the table and no longer participate in this round

Ultimately, you can win a round in two ways. At the showdown you have the best combination of cards of everyone. Or you are the only one left as an active player at the table because the rest of the players ‘fold’.
