This is how you turn your iPhone into a (subtle) night light

Looking for something in the dark or lighting your way through the house: the flashlight of your iPhone often comes in handy as a night light. It’s just pretty bright, even on the softest setting. Can’t that be a little less? Well, secretly yes!

Read on after the ad.

Turn down iPhone flashlight

Your iPhone’s flashlight is hard to miss: a prominent button on your lock screen activates it. And if you want to adjust the intensity, you can do this via the control panel. Swipe down from the top right, or bottom to top if you have a home button, and then press and hold the flashlight. You can now make it brighter or softer.

Unfortunately, the softest setting is not exactly subtle. If you want to illuminate your way to the toilet in the middle of the night, you can still be quiet – the bright light will wake your partner anyway. Fortunately, you can make your iPhone more suitable as a nightlight with Assignments.

Open the Assignments app. Don’t have it on your phone? Then download the app again using the button below.

Assignments

When you have the app in front of you, follow these steps:

  1. In the ‘Assignments’ tab, tap the plus sign to create a new assignment.
  2. Tap ‘Add task’, and search for ‘flashlight’.
  3. Select the ‘Set up flashlight’ script.
  4. Tap the “>” next to “Turn on flashlight” and set the brightness to the lowest level.
  5. Optional: Tap Set Flashlight at the top and set a name and symbol for the command.
  6. Tap Done in the top right.

By tapping on the command you just created, the flashlight turns on very gently. So it is completely suitable as a night light! You turn the light off again on the lock screen or control panel.

You can also hold the assignment you created and tap “Details”. Here you will then be given the option to show the assignment on your home screen. This way you can get to it extra quickly!
