this is how you stream an iPhone video to your Mac

It has recently become possible to stream the image from your iPhone to your Mac. You do that with AirPlay and you can do it with videos, photos and audio. This is how AirPlay works from your iPhone to your Mac.

Read on after the ad.

AirPlay from iPhone to Mac

With AirPlay you have been streaming from your Apple devices to an Apple TV or a smart TV that supports AirPlay 2 for some time. From iOS 15 and macOS Monterey, this function has been expanded, because you can now also AirPlay the image from the iPhone to the Mac.

This is how most apps send the image from the iPhone to the Mac via AirPlay:

  1. Start a video in full screen;
  2. Tap the AirPlay icon (a square with a triangle, see below);
  3. Tap the name of your Mac.

With some apps — including YouTube — AirPlay from iPhone to Mac works in a slightly different way. There is no AirPlay icon there, but access AirPlay by tapping the Chromecast icon:

  1. Start a video in full screen;
  2. Tap the Chromecast icon at the top right;
  3. Choose ‘AirPlay & Bluetooth devices’;
  4. Tap the name of your Mac.

Don’t see your Mac appearing in the list? Then your iPhone and Mac are probably not connected to the same WiFi network. Also keep in mind that you need an iPhone with iOS 15 or newer, and a Mac with macOS Monterey or newer.

Mirror iPhone on Mac

You can also mirror the iPhone image on your Mac. This is useful, for example, if the streaming icon is missing from a certain app. How to mirror your iPhone screen to your Mac (Synchronized display):

  1. Swipe down from the top right of the screen to open the Control Center (on older iPhones, swipe up from the bottom of the screen);
  2. Above ‘Focus’ you see a button with two squares. Tap it;
  3. Tap the name of your Mac.

Synchronous playback starts. To stop mirroring, open the Control Center again and tap the Synchronous View icon again.
