In the past, a household book was standard in almost every household. Grandma and Grandpa kept one so they could always keep an eye on expenses and know what costs how much and how much money was left over at the end. Due to the fast pace of change, the household book has often been pushed into the background. But right now, when you should know exactly the income and expenses, it makes sense again. You don’t have to keep a manual household book for this, you can use free apps.

There are countless free household book apps in the Google Play Store or Apple’s App Store. We have chosen two applications here as examples that I have tried out beforehand and can recommend. The financial checker is the household book app that I ended up using more often. It is offered by “Deutscher Sparkassen- und Giroverband eV” and offers everything you need. Everything is self-explanatory, you get the typical savings bank look and a good overview of all your expenses.

Budget Book: Money Manager

I also liked Realbyte Inc.’s budget book. This free app has been installed millions of times and has positive reviews. Looks a bit more modern overall and also offers everything you need. There are still in-app purchases. In the end, the advertising was a bit too intrusive for me, so I switched back to the financial checker. But of course that is all a matter of opinion.

Budget books as an app is also available as a paid version. They then offer additional options. Here you should consider whether you need them and will use them at all. At some point it just became too much for me, so I only enter purchases as a whole and not every little detail. Either way, it’s still extra work. This gives you a good overview of your financial possibilities.

Personally, I haven’t just been saving since the crisis, but have been for years. I never want to pay more than is actually necessary. That’s why I use every app from retailers to get additional discounts. Calculated per month, I save so many euros. Shopping later and on certain days is also worthwhile. In baking stations, rolls, bread or other delicacies are usually cheaper. Fruit and vegetables are cheaper on Saturday evenings because they cannot be sold after the weekend. The same applies to certain refrigerated products. Shop smart and check in on different days and times to see what’s on offerit’s worth it.
