A prototype of the rare port of Gears of War 3 for the PlayStation 3 has entered the Internet. A user with a nickname PixelButts uploaded it to Archive.org on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the port itself. Everyone can download it. But it has a catch. You’ll probably only run the game on a PS3 devkit that has more RAM than the end-user version. It will not work on normal.
The original build was created on May 19, 2011 and was the result of a test. The data leaked to the authors and circulated exclusively among collectors and gaming enthusiasts who specialize in similar things. But it was useless to them for a long time. According to PixelButts, he was the first to break the game 9 years later, which we wrote about last year. And now he decided to release an unusual fragment of history for everyone.

At the moment, Gears of War 3 for PS3 doesn’t work in emulators either, but that might change in the future if developers focus on it. And they will undoubtedly be interested. For example, in RPCS3 you currently only get to the title screen. In addition, a keyboard is required to load individual maps, which is why the standard console is useless.
So far, it is not exactly a massacre that everyone would enjoy, but the issue does not detract from the interest. PixelButts itself warned that it would not answer any further questions or provide “technical support”. This is an authentic unmodified version. At the same time, he himself probably doesn’t want to spend more time with similar things, so we have to understand it as generous goodbye.
The prototype bag has ruptured in recent months
Port Gears of War 3 originated in the Epic Games studio as part of testing the Unreal Engine 3, but was never intended for release, if you could think of it. After the video came out of the game last year, Epic Games additionally confirmed its authenticity, saying it was an experiment, not a plan to rid Gears of the xbox exclusivity label. The video from 2020 captures an almost 8.5-hour-long passage through the game, which, however, on the PS3 faces various errors and framerate fluctuations.
