the new Mac mini 2022 is coming soon

It has been rumored for some time that Apple will release two versions of the Mac mini in 2022. One of these may be coming soon, as Apple references an unreleased Mac mini in the firmware of the new Studio Display.

Read on after the ad.

Mac mini at WWDC 2022?

Apple’s Studio Display has an A13 Bionic chip for, among other things, the image processing of the webcam and Spatial Audio. Because of this, the monitor is actually running on a special version of iOS. And references to an unknown Mac mini have been found in this operating system.

The references in the Studio Display firmware were discovered by developer Steve Throughton-Smith. Apple is talking about a ‘Macmini10.1’ and this is a model number that the company has not released before. It is likely that Apple is referring to an upcoming Mac mini model.

Recently Mark Gurman predicted from Bloomberg Apple to announce two new Macs at WWDC 2022. One of those is likely the MacBook Air 2022, and the other Mac was another question mark. Due to the reference discovered in the firmware, we think there’s a good chance the second is the Mac mini. Apple is hosting WWDC on June 6, so hopefully we’ll hear more about it then.

Which Mac mini?

As mentioned, Apple will reportedly present two Mac minis this year. First of all, there would be a high-end Mac mini with powerful M1 Pro and M1 Max chips. In addition, there will be a successor to the current Mac mini, which is cheaper and is enhanced by an M2 chip.

According to sources from 9to5Mac However, Apple has scrapped plans for a Mac mini with M1 Pro and M1 Max chips. Probably to make way for the Mac Studio that the company presented in March. This is a desktop Mac that falls between the Mac mini and Mac Pro in power and size.

Apple will probably first present a Mac mini with M2 chip. The MacBook Air that Apple would also announce at WWDC also has this chip. The high-end Mac mini will follow at a later date, but with chips that are a generation newer: the M2 Pro and M2 Max.
