Messing with your Galaxy Fold 3? Samsung turns off the camera!

Samsung does not take half measures if you are going to mess around with the Galaxy Fold 3, because the camera just turns off.

As standard, a Samsung smartphone, and therefore also the Galaxy Fold 3, comes with Android as software. It’s fairly easy to customize the software, but Android doesn’t automatically mean you can go about your business with impunity.

And that brings us to today’s story. Modders discovered that Samsung disables the camera of the Galaxy Fold 3 as soon as you start working with the bootloader. You need the bootloader to be able to install custom software on your Samsung. The South Korean tech giant is no longer in control from that point on, and as a security measure of sorts, the camera turns off. It is no longer possible to enable it. Adjustments to multiple copies of the smartphone had the same result.

The only way to get the Samsung Galaxy Fold 3 camera working again is to disable the boatloader and leave the original Android software untouched. This is possible retroactively. So it’s not like your camera is permanently turned off or something like that.

There is no immediate reason why custom firmware on a smartphone could harm the camera of the device. It clearly looks like a security measure from Samsung. (via XDA Developers)
