The end of combustion engines is coming: from 2035, no new cars with diesel or petrol engines will be allowed to be registered in the EU. The EU member states had already agreed on the end of combustion engines last October, and now it has finally been decided.

EU decides to phase out combustion engines from 2035

By 2035 at the latest, drivers and car manufacturers will have to adapt. As part of the Fit for 55 programme, the European Parliament has Out for new cars with diesel and petrol engines decided. From 2035, such cars and vans will no longer be allowed to be newly registered in the EU. The ban does not apply to cars that have already been registered.

It has been clear since October last year that there will be an end to combustion engines in the EU. In the fall, the EU countries agreed to phase out by 2035. With the so-called e-fuels the last word has not yet been spoken. The EU Commission wants to further examine whether cars with combustion engines that can be operated with e-fuels can also be registered after 2034. The German federal government in particular had campaigned for this after the FDP had called for an exception for e-fuel engines.

Burner off: CDU politicians criticize the decision

Several MEPs from the Christian Democrats have criticized the decision to phase out combustion engines. The EU Parliament “missed the last exit”, as Jens Gieseke put it, spokesman for transport policy for the CDU/CSU group.
