The forgotten phone: Nokia 3310 from 2000

Already the 200th edition of ‘The Forgotten Phone’ and ‘The Forgotten Smartphone’. This time we will discuss the Nokia 3310, one of the most popular phones ever. This beloved device should of course not be missing in this section.

Almost four years ago, Nokia came up with the 3310 (2017). This was the old nostalgic Nokia 3310 in a new guise, including a housing in attractive colors. This is the 200th episode of our ‘Forgotten’ column. Of course, the Nokia 3310 cannot be missed in our section. We therefore discuss it this week.

The rock-solid telephone appeared more than 20 years ago, in 2000. Again, the telephone was unmistakably known for its solidity. We still see this in many ways in hypes, such as in comparison with the iPhone. When you dropped the 3310, the floor was broken; the phone was still intact. You still see pictures like this now and then. See also the video at the bottom of this article. The device that came from Finland (but was also manufactured in Hungary) has been sold about 126 million times. The devices are still sold on Marktplaats for a lot of money.

The Nokia 3310 was equipped with a monochrome display with a resolution of 84 x 28 pixels. The device had the dimensions 113 x 48 millimeters, a thickness of no less than 22 millimeters and a considerable weight of 133 grams. You could endlessly personalize the device with the Xpress-On covers. In addition to the 35 ring tones, you could also personalize some ringtones yourself. The Nokia 3310 was a real icon. A new feature was that you could type longer text messages; 3x longer than one text message. There was also a stopwatch and you could play the snake game Snake on your Nokia 3310.

Believe it or not, but when the Nokia 3310 was released in 2000, it cost about 500 guilders, about 225 euros.
