BeReal has been in our lives for a few months now, time to dive a little deeper into it. And what better time than to declare this app as App of the Week when the big Android update is live? This week we discuss BeReal.

Perfection, stylized images from above, heavy filters: people are sometimes a bit tired of that glamorous image from Instagram. BeReal was created for this purpose. This French app doesn’t give you a notification when you want it, but when it wants it: It’s time to BeReal!’ Then you need to take two pictures within two minutes: one with your rear camera and one with your front camera (taking the pictures almost at the same time). No time to think, no filters and no time to stage everything. If you make your BeReal later than those two minutes (which is quite possible, because you have meetings, are in the cinema and just live), then it is labeled as ‘late’.

You would think that people would find it complicated, such ‘raw’ shots, but BeReal has now been installed more than 53 million times. On a roll. So good, that it has freed up money to make a better app for Android. That is noticeable. The app seems to run much smoother. The design has also been adjusted, making the app look less square and more modern. It also seems to be new, or the author of this piece has not paid attention, that you can drag the ‘selfie’ of others. This way you can see everything that was captured on the photo with the rear cameras.

With the buttocks exposed

The update also shows how many times it took you to make the BeReal. So you really have to expose your butt (well, not quite of course). In addition, it has also been made better to see who wants to be friends with you. That is important, because BeReal is mainly about real friends. They get that realistic look into your life. Although there is also a ‘discover’ section where you can meet new people: it remains social media of course. There is, however, a condition: you must first post a BeReal yourself before you can see someone else’s.

BeReal is a cool app, especially now that it has gone through such a visual improvement. The concept is well put together and that is reflected in how many people use it. It is not easy to set up a new social medium and make it successful, because the established order is very… established. However, this concept turns out to be so original that many people are very fanatical about it. The advantage is that this is only possible to a certain extent when it comes to your own posts. After all, you only get the call to make a post once a day. Actually, that’s delicious. It takes a lot of pressure off the kettle.

The update of the app is a welcome surprise, but it doesn’t work equally well for everyone. Also, some people are shocked by the number to see how many times they have tried to make a BeReal. Ultimately, however, the update makes the app much more modern, so we do see this as a big step forward.
