That’s why the new PS5 version is lighter – and hotter

The Playstation 5 was released in a new version last week. This PS5 is now 300 grams lighter. The weight loss is, however, at the expense of the cooling capacity.

Last week, a new Playstation 5 version appeared first in Australia, then also in the USA and Japan. The main difference between the new PS5 and its predecessor is its weight – it weighs a whopping 300 grams less. In the digital version without a physical drive, it is now 3.6 kg instead of the previous 3.9 kg. As already suspected, Sony has obviously cut back on the heat sinks for the CPU and GPU for weight loss.

New PS5 version up to 5 degrees warmer

The Californian tech youtuber Austin Evans got one of the new PS5 versions from Japan – one of the CFI-1100B models – and took a look inside the console. Included he found outthat, on the one hand, the built-in heat sink is much smaller than that of the original PS5.

A direct comparison of the temperature showed that, according to Evans, the new Playstation 5 version is three to five degrees Celsius warmer than the old one. The fan has also been changed a bit, but that didn’t make a difference in weight.

Critics: inside, who said that a higher temperature of the console could also mean that the new heat sink simply worked more efficiently, Evans countered that Sony had really made the heat sink significantly smaller. The missing hardware parts would ensure that the new console version does not dissipate the heat as efficiently as the previous one.

Playstation 5 is probably cheaper to build for Sony

The conclusion of the technology Youtuber: Sony also made minor changes to the WLAN card and the antennas. The stand has also been improved. However, the updated PS5 seems to be cheaper to produce, although the cooling performance is significantly lower.

At least for the moment, Evans says, the original PS5 seems to be the better console. The extent to which the performance of the two console versions differs will only be shown by more detailed comparison tests.
