That’s really how it looks in terms of range

Manufacturers of electric cars like to boast about massive range. But is this even realistic when you’re driving 130 km/h on the motorway? The answer is sobering for electro fans.

The higher the speed, the higher the consumption. What is true for conventional cars with combustion engines is also true for electric cars. But that doesn’t stop manufacturers from throwing around extreme values ​​in advertising when it comes to the Range with one battery charge goes. For example, the Mercedes EQS 450+ is supposed to cover 785 kilometers according to the WLTP standard before it has to be plugged in again. In reality, however, things are different on German autobahns.

E-cars: the range on the freeway is significantly lower

The magazine Auto Bild has 36 current e-cars under the microscope and let them drive at a constant speed of 130 km/h. A different picture quickly emerged in comparison with the official information provided by the manufacturers on the range. The already mentioned Mercedes EQS 450+ does not manage anywhere near 785, but only 482 kilometers on the Autobahn. Nevertheless, it still comes the furthest of all the e-cars tested.

In second place is the BMW iX xDrive 50 to find, even if he does not cover 630 but 434 kilometers on the autobahn. Hyundai was able to secure third place with its Genesis Electrified G80 (427 instead of 520 kilometers).

The first Tesla can take seventh place in the ranking. The Tesla Model 3 was not able to cover 491 kilometers on the Autobahn, but at least 363 kilometers (source: Car picture).

In order to get more range, e-cars are recommended similar tips as for combustion engines. Anyone who drives with foresight and evenly and only accelerates gently saves energy. Air conditioning and heating should also be used with caution so as not to put additional strain on the battery.
