Speed limit on highways: Experts call for a reassessment
According to a new study, a speed limit on German autobahns would be more important than previously thought. According to the Federal Environment Agency, CO₂ emissions would fall more significantly than previously assumed. The authorities are thus correcting an older calculation in which some factors were not taken into account.

There will be no speed limit on parts of the German autobahn in 2023 either. Proponents have long argued that a mandatory speed limit would Emission of climate-damaging carbon dioxide limited. New speed limit study takes more factors into account
In contrast to the older study by the Federal Environment Agency, this takes into account new factors that have not previously been examined. That’s how it became, among other things behavior patterns of drivers examined more closely. According to the calculations, a speed limit would make motorways less attractive overall than country roads and lead to a 1.1 percent reduction in use.
In addition, a speed limit should lead to a general rethink among some drivers. Other means of transport would gain in attractiveness. A decline in mileage of 2.1 percent is expected for car traffic.
