Sony’s new handheld Project Q runs on Android

You didn’t end up on a game site, but we can’t let this news go. While we said goodbye to Google Stadia many months ago, there is still something new that everything has to do with Android. Not with Google, but with Sony. The new PlayStation handheld, now known under the working title Project Q, would run on Android.

Project Q

Sony has already announced the handheld, so it’s no secret that it’s in the works, but otherwise details are a bit sparse. Now a leak has been posted by @Zuby_Tech which indicates that Project Q has a large screen (8 inches) and a kind of DualSense controller (the PlayStation 5 controller) cut in half on either side to control your game. It’s a bit like the Nintendo Switch, with a big screen in the middle and buttons for both hands on each side.

That was the hardware, but the best news – for us – is that the handheld runs on Android. The device’s menu would even be built like an Android launcher of sorts, complete with app drawer, three-button navigation, and Android apps. Qualcomm would provide the chip for the device, so that’s a good match for Android (the majority of Android phones have a Qualcomm chip).

Game handheld on Android

It’s all still in development, of course, but it’s great to see Android getting a new application soon. The device itself is expected to hit the market later this year. It is not a stand-alone gaming handheld: you need a PlayStation 5 for it, with this device serving as an extension on which you can play games via Remote Play (a kind of streaming). In the past, PlayStation also made handhelds, namely PSP and PS Vita.

However, the last one appeared 12 years ago, so it’s time for a new handheld. In that respect, the smartphone has not quite won it in terms of gaming on the go. But if the new handhelds run on Android, the two will creep closer together.

What do you think of Project Q? Are you interested in it, or are you not such a gamer on the go? Leave it now in the comments.
