smartphone becomes less expensive (+poll)

According to analyst firm IDC, the smartphone is getting cheaper. The price of smartphones has reached the highest level. We are curious what you paid for your current phone.

Smartphones are getting cheaper

Consumers spent an average of $415 on a phone in 2022. In 2019, that amount was $334. IDC predicts that the price will drop steadily to $376 in the coming years. That in a world where expensive Plus and Pro phones are launched every year, that might be hard to imagine.

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is available from 1399 euros. You can buy the Xiaomi 13 Pro for a suggested retail price of 1299 euros. The price of these types of models has been rising for several years, and you no longer buy them for 1000 euros or less.

We also see that the sale of telephones has been on a downward trend for some time. Partly because telephones last longer, but also because innovations are less significant in new devices. Consumers no longer trade in their phones after a few years.

IDC indicates that most markets will experience double-digit declines in the first half of 2023 as a result. In the third quarter, they will turn positive and experience double-digit growth in the last quarter of the year. The analyst firm also expects the influx of premium flagships, which typically launch in the third and fourth quarters, to help keep the full-year decline from getting worse.
