say goodbye to the Lightning cable

All AirPods models will have a USB-C connection in 2024. But it doesn’t stop there, because even more Apple devices have to switch to the new cable.

AirPods will get a USB-C connection in 2024

According to reliable Apple expert Mark Gurman, all AirPods models will have a USB-C connection in 2024. But according to the Bloomberg journalist, the Magic Keyboard and Apple’s Magic Trackpad will also receive an upgrade to USB-C.

This comes as no surprise, as the European Union recently passed a new law. This states that all new smartphones, tablets and cameras in the EU must have a USB-C connection for charging.

The law will take effect in the fourth quarter of 2024 and will not apply to devices purchased before that time. So you don’t have to expect that you will soon be able to trade in your AirPods 3 or iPhone 14 for a version with USB-C.

With or without a charger: the choice will soon be yours

You will also have to choose whether you want to buy a device with or without the supplied charger. This means that you will soon be able to choose whether you want to purchase a set of AirPods with charger or whether you want to use the charger you already have.

That also means the end of the trusted Lightning cable. This of course has the advantage that you no longer have to carry around all kinds of different cables to charge your earbuds, iPad or iPhone.

The EU has secretly been working for years to make USB-C the new standard connection for mobile devices such as the iPhone and the AirPods. Now with the current climate perils and the rules for emissions, the law has gained momentum. In this way, Europe is trying to reduce the amount of electronic waste.
