Samsung offers a first look at the Wear-based One UI
The upcoming Samsung Galaxy Watch will be the first device to use the Wear watch operating system developed jointly with Google. The manufacturer showed a first sneak peek on the occasion of MWC 2021.
At the Mobile World Congress (MWC), the South Korean manufacturer Samsung Electronics presented its new One-UI-Watch user interface as part of a virtual event. It is inspired by the UI of the same name on Samsung’s smartphones. That is intentional. The manufacturer wants to bring the two device classes closer together.

Smartphones and smartwatches are moving closer together
The new platform developed jointly with Google, which will only be called Wear instead of Wear OS, should not only look fresher, it also promises performance improvements and extended battery life. Samsung wants to inspire lovers of the previous Galaxy Watches with the greater variety of apps from the Playstore.
The closer coordination between watch and smartphone will have very practical effects. For example, watch-compatible apps are automatically installed on the watch as soon as they have been installed on the smartphone. For example, if the clock app on the smartphone is set to show the time in different cities around the globe, this setting is automatically mirrored on the clock. If calls and messages are blocked on the watch, they will also be blocked on the smartphone. Wear first presented Google in the spring at the developer conference I / O.
Galaxy Watch is coming later, but still in the summer
“Samsung and Google have a long tradition of working together, and whenever we have worked together, the best comes out for our customers,” says Sameer Samat, who is responsible for Android and Wear at Google. βThis of course also applies to this new, uniform platform, which is being used for the first time on the new Galaxy Watch from Samsung. In collaboration with Samsung, we’re excited to offer longer battery life, faster performance and a wide range of apps, including many from Google, for a whole new wearable experience. “
Contrary to what some market observers expected, Samsung did not show the upcoming Galaxy Watch itself, but pointed out that there will be a dedicated unpacked event in the summer.
