It was one of Samsung’s most important and popular high-end smartphones, which is now being sent to its well-deserved retirement after four years. Officially there are no more software updates, but the South Korean company has already proven that they don’t believe in strict schedules.

Samsung Galaxy S9: Software updates discontinued

The Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus were the slightly upgraded versions of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus. There, the company had installed a variable aperture in the camera for the first time. The beautiful design, the good technical equipment and the convincing camera have ensured that the smartphones have become extremely popular. To this day, many people still use one of the models simply because they still work. With the discontinuation of software support, you should now think about a change at the latest.

Both the Samsung Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9 Plus are namely no longer on the software update list (Source: Samsung). This means that owners of these smartphones can no longer count on software updates. You should now think about another smartphone if you use your cell phone to do important things like online banking. Samsung smartphones don’t immediately become insecure, but you shouldn’t take any unnecessary risks either.

Samsung has been rolling out software updates for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus for a lot longer than anyone expected anyway. Actually, the extended update guarantee only applies to newer models. But that hasn’t bothered the South Korean manufacturer to keep the older smartphones up to date. Four years of software support is very good, and the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S8 have also seen that updates sometimes come even later when critical security gaps appear.

Which Samsung smartphone to buy as a successor?

Interestingly, my sister used the Galaxy S9 until recently and is now switched to the Galaxy S21 FE (test).. She is very satisfied with this new Samsung smartphone. You get a really great phone with a good display, long battery life and a strong camera. In the meantime, the price has already fallen noticeably (check it out on Amazon). So you can’t go wrong with this model if you still want to have a high-end phone but don’t want to spend a fortune on a Galaxy S22.
