Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra most popular Android phone in Q1 ’23

While we think that due to the somewhat slower innovations in smartphones, many people more often opted for a mid-range phone, it appears that high-end devices are still extremely popular. Market research shows that in the first quarter of 2023, the flagship Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra was the most popular luxury Android phone.

Canalys says in a report that sales (or rather: shipments) of smartphones in the high-end segment have even grown. In the first quarter of 2023, that had grown by no less than 4.7 percent compared to the same quarter in 2022. Now it is good to know what exactly a high-end phone is. In my opinion, that is a device of 800 euros and more, but according to the rules of Canalys it concerns devices from 500 dollars (so about 500 euros).

Smartphone sales down

Now you can discuss that assessment of what is high-end, but it does show that Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is still the most popular phone. Well, Android phone: Apple is at the top with no less than four iPhones: iPhone 14 Pro Max,: iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 and iPhone 13. So Samsung has to settle for fifth place, but the first place of the Android devices. Other popular Android phones are the S23 and S23+ (not much of a surprise there), but also the Xiaomi 13, Huawei Mate 50 and Galaxy Z Flip 4. Good news for foldable devices: apparently they are allowed. Flip 4 is also a bit older: it was also on the market for months in Q1.

Incidentally, the research agency sees that the smartphone market itself is still shrinking: it has now shrunk by 13 percent compared to the same quarter in 2022. Could that be because people are using their phones longer? Out of sustainability, or to keep your hand a little more on the purse strings during this economically uncertain time? Or are phones less exciting due to less innovation? There should actually be a follow-up study of this, if it is up to us.

Why do you think people are buying fewer smartphones? Leave it now in the comments.
