Samsung bets on gaming: comes with Gaming Hub

According to Samsung, consumers are not too eager to play games on their televisions (apart from console gaming). Samsung itself believes that its ecosystem has fully embraced game streaming, but that consumers are refusing to actually make full use of it. However, it does not give up and comes with a Gaming Hub for TVs.

Game Developers Conference

During the Game Developers Conference (GDC), the Korean brand told more about its game hub. It’s a service that you can expect on Samsung smart TVs from 2022 soon, with the aim of getting people into cloud gaming. The advantage of cloud gaming is that your hardware does not have to be very good to still play games that normally require a lot of hardware. That’s because the game runs on a server somewhere else and you only make sure with your internet connection that you can display what’s running on that server on your device.

The Samsung Gaming Hub is a cloud game service that means you no longer have to buy expensive consoles to play a game like Far Cry 6. While cloud gaming has a lot of potential, there are also some snags, such as latency (delays). Also, some people don’t like not really having ownership of a physical game and would rather pay the same amount for a physical box containing the game.

Partly because of this, for example, a cloud service such as Google Stadia is struggling to find customers. Although that is probably also because it was not entirely clear how it worked with the subscription types and with the controllers that were needed in the first place. Moreover, the prices of the games didn’t help either: you can get many titles cheaper on consoles (or even on disc).

Samsung has said it is eager to make gaming a “first-class citizen” on Samsung TVs and to prove that cloud streaming is ready for all types of users. The Samsung Gaming Hub should become a sort of gathering place for all your game streaming services and, like Netflix, comes with recommendations based on what you’ve played before thanks to artificial intelligence.

According to Samsung, you can play a game like Rainbow Six via the hub as it is intended: without delays. As Samsungs say, you can also easily connect controllers to it and it is just as easy to find games. Samsung hopes to contribute to streaming games to become the norm, but for this it still needs a lot of marketing budget to ensure that more gamers also believe in it. The Samsung Gaming Hub will appear on 2022 Samsung TVs later this year.
