Romy Boomsma: ‘They thought I was sitting at home as a kind of subordinate woman’
When Romy Boomsma has her first child, the influencer takes a break from her work. Something for which, as it turns out, she gets a lot of criticism.
A life on the farm sounded like music to Romy’s ears. She now lives there with her husband Arie Boomsma, their three children – Bobby (7), Mozes (5) and Juniper (3) – and her mother. “We initially agreed that I would be home, and I loved that. It gave me a lot of peace because I could follow the rhythm of the children,” she says Mary Claire. Despite the fact that she has been home full-time for ‘only’ two years, she still received a lot of criticism. Full-time mothering would no longer be of this time.

“The criticism came from the perception that I was a kind of subservient female who sat at home. While I myself thought it was the ultimate luxury that I didn’t have to do everything with young children right away. There was only twenty-three months between the first two, they slept badly and I was exhausted,” says Romy.

Because she was able to work on multiple projects, she decided to pick up working again. But that also did not go without a hitch: “I am constantly in two roles: I am working and I am mothering. It was tough to go back to work a lot while the youngest was only one and a half, in that respect it would have been nice if it had all happened a year later.”
