Review Mercedes-Benz A-class: what are the advantages and pain points of the different versions?

The German car brand Mercedes-Benz was founded in 1926, as a result of the collaboration between Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft of Gottlieb Daimler and the company Benz & Cie. of Carl Benz. The very first car was made in the year 1885. The first test drive was made in July of that year. Since the inception of the car brand, the three-pointed star logo has been used. This can currently still be found on all Mercedes cars.

In 1997, the Mercedes A-class – also known as Mercedes-Benz A-class – was introduced. This is the smallest variant in the Mercedes range. The compact vehicle, on the other hand, offers enough space, luxury and comfort for long journeys. In this blog you can read the advantages and the pain points of the Mercedes-Benz A-class from the years 2016 to 2021.

Ins and outs of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class

The Mercedes-Benz A-class is a hatchback. The first model was seen as unusual and out of place. This is because the A-class is the smallest model in the entire range of Mercedes. Characteristic of this type of car is that it always has 5 doors and comes standard with ESP.

The A class was first introduced in 1997 and is still in production to this day. From 1997 until now, three different generations have been released: the original W168, the W169 released in 2004 and the W176 from 2012. At the end of 1993, negotiations took place – together with various unions – for a new factory. This eventually became the German Rastatt. The production of the first generation A-class took place in this factory. After preparations for production in 1994, the actual first production followed in June 1997.

Finally, in 2002, preparations were again made in Rastatt for the production of the second-generation A-class. An investment of 900 million was made for a new factory. Ten years ago there was the so-called turnaround: a real hatchback within the compact middle class cars. Characteristic of the A-class after this cover is the four-door hatchback shape.

We run through the pluses and minuses of our favorite versions of the Mercedes-Benz A class, below by year of manufacture – from new to old.
