Results: Sega in 2022 is stronger than in 2021 (and weaker than in 2023)

Gone are the days when we wondered if the game division of Sega would make it through the winter and if there would be nothing left of the blue hedgehog brand but slot machines. A few great studio acquisitions later, the Japanese publisher began to raise its head, and it is now the video game section that records the largest turnover by division. For its fiscal year 2022, Sega thus achieved a turnover of 2.6 billion euros for 307.1 million in net profits, figures significantly above those of the fiscal year 2021 (2.1 billion turnover and 247.5 million in profits Out of these 2.6 billion turnover, video games represent 1.2 billion in revenue, not to mention net profits of around 215 million euros.

The excellent results of the video game division are mainly due to a big jump in game sales, which went from 20.7 million units in 2021 to 27.9 million games in 2022! Unsurprisingly, the Sonic franchise is the one that has brought in the most with 8.1 million games sold (including 3.2 million for Sonic Frontiers), ahead of Persona (3.2 million games sold), Like a Dragon (2, 8 million games) and Total War (2.3 million). As for mobile gaming, it does not yet have the “lead” at Sega: games on consoles and PC represent 490 million euros in turnover against 415 million euros on the side of free-to-play mobile (a mobile turnover carried out almost entirely in Japan). And that’s without the integration of Rovio in the accounts, the Finnish studio having been swallowed by Sega just a few weeks ago.

Sega is therefore much stronger in 2022 than in 2021, and it will be even better for the current fiscal year which runs from April 2023 to March 2024. The publisher is indeed counting on an annual turnover of 2. 9 billion euros, a net profit of 267 million euros, and 34.3 million games sold. Let’s bet that the releases this year of Sonic Origins Plus, Samba de Amigo: Party Central or even Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name (phew!) will make it possible to achieve these ambitious objectives.
