Quickly install iOS 15.2 and macOS 12.1

Have you not installed the latest updates of Apple’s operating systems yet? Then do that as soon as possible! iOS and iPadOS 15.2, macOS 12.1, watchOS 8.3, and tvOS 15.2 fix serious security vulnerabilities that allowed remote takeover of your devices.

Apple made this known on its Security page. However, the company has not yet said whether the vulnerabilities have already been actively exploited for attacks.

This is how iOS 15 remote jailbreak works

Chinese security researchers, including Pangu Team known for its jailbreaks, showed what could be done with the security vulnerabilities in October during a hacker competition. During the TianfuCup, they performed a spectacular ‘remote jailbreak of iOS 15 on the iPhone 13.

They exploited vulnerabilities in Apple’s WebKit browser engine (which is woven throughout iOS) and the operating system kernel. Calling up a manipulated website thus led to the complete takeover of the iPhone. The security researchers had reported the vulnerabilities to Apple.

The company ‘Kunlun Lab’ had also discovered a number of security vulnerabilities, which allowed it to take over both iPhones and Macs. Kunlun Lab passed this on to Apple.

Patches missing for iOS 14 and macOS 11

Apple lists more than 40 closed security vulnerabilities for iOS and iPadOS 15.2, macOS 12.1, watchOS 8.3 and tvOS 15.2, including those from Pangu and Kunlun Lab. There are no updates available for iOS 14 and iOS 12 yet. It remains unclear whether the bugs can also be exploited for attacks and have yet to be fixed. If you are still on the old versions, we would advise you to update as soon as possible.

For macOS 11 Big Sur and macOS 10.15 Catalina, Apple has already released updates that fix the vulnerabilities in the kernel. And as of today there is also an update to Safari 15.2. Do you have an older version? Please use a different browser temporarily. And update soon, of course.
