Focus in iOS 15: put an icon in the status bar
Focus is a new iOS 15 feature that gives you more control over your notifications. However, the feature has another hidden property. It is possible to put an icon (such as a heart, a smiley or a flame) in the status bar of your iPhone. The steps below will show you exactly how to do this!
Place an icon in the status bar of your iPhone or iPad with focus:
- Tap ‘Settings’, scroll down and tap ‘Focus’;
- Tap the plus sign at the top right and choose ‘Custom’;
- Give your focus a name, choose one of the icons and tap ‘Next’;
- Choose who can send you notifications (you can select anyone), allow calls from ‘Anyone’ and tap ‘Allow’;
- Add all the apps you want to receive notifications from and tap ‘Allow’;
- Tap “Done” and your focus is ready.
Don’t forget to turn on the focus you just created (‘Settings > Focus > [Focus NAAM] > turn on the slider’). When you see an arrow in the status bar of your iPhone or iPad instead of the icon, you also have to dive into the settings.
This arrow means that your iPhone is currently (or has just started) using certain location services. Usually this is temporary and the arrow disappears by itself, but sometimes you have to turn off a certain location service first. You do this in the following way.
- Open the ‘Settings’ and go to ‘Privacy’;
- Tap “Location Services” and customize the amenities you want.
The (open) arrow shows which app is currently or has just used your location services. With these parts you have to adjust the facilities to, for example, ‘When using the app’.
Adjust focus icon
Do you want another icon? Then you can easily change it. Tap Settings > Focus. Tap the name of the focus and choose ‘Name and display’. Choose a new icon and tap ‘Done’.
Are you tired of the icon? Then you can remove the icon by turning off your chosen focus. Tap ‘Settings > Focus > [Focus NAAM]’. Then turn off the slider. You can also completely remove the created focus here by tapping ‘Remove focus’.
