Primary schools sing Dutch ‘We are the world’ for Ukraine

The initiative comes from teacher Jiska Noortman from a primary school in Heiloo. On Thursday she put the website Wijstaanhiersterk.nl online where schools can download the text and music of the song Wij Stand Hier Sterk.

Fundraising

According to Jiska, this has happened hundreds of times within half a day. The intention is that as many children as possible will sing along in schoolyards in the Netherlands at 11.55 am on Wednesday. The mini concert can then be linked to a fundraising for Giro555, for the victims of the war in Ukraine. The initiators have chosen this time, five to twelve, to “indicate the seriousness of the situation in Ukraine”.

Action

They can decide for themselves how the primary schools collect money for Giro555 with the campaign. “Schools are free in the way in which they collect the money. This can be done, for example, by passing the cap around or through donations from parents, grandfathers, grandmothers and neighbours,” reports Miss Jiska on the website. “Then schools transfer the collected amount to Giro555 themselves.”

Talk about it

Jiska and composer Hubert-Jan Horrocks came up with the idea because the war in Ukraine is very much alive among students. They hope that the action will also be a way for young children to talk about the situation of their peers in Ukraine.

We Are The World by Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie and Quincy Jones is a song released in 1985 to raise money for famine victims in Ethiopia. Dozens of world-famous singers contributed to the performance at the time. The song topped the charts for weeks.
