Polestar 2 gets Apple CarPlay

Do you own a car from Polestar, Volvo’s electric brand? Then you had to do without Apple CarPlay support for a long time. That is finally changing! Polestar has added iPhone integration to its Polestar 2 model. The latest over the air update brings support for Apple CarPlay, the manufacturer announced on Twitter

Polestar owners will be able to use their iPhone through the car’s infotainment system after the update. Your iPhone takes over the screen of your car radio, as it were. With CarPlay you use everything via the usual iPhone interface, be it navigation, music control, Messages or many other apps. In addition, chatting with Siri is directly integrated into the infotainment system.

CarPlay will be available as an over-the-air update

CarPlay is now available as an over-the-air update (OTA), Polestar said. That means it can be installed directly through your car. However, the update will be made available gradually. It remains unclear when it will be available for the first owners in the Netherlands. Alternatively, it is also possible to have the update installed by a Polestar dealer. By the way, CarPlay only works wired in the Polestar 2 and not wirelessly.

As mentioned above, Polestar has a first with its CarPlay support. Because the infotainment system of the Polestar 2 runs standard on Android Automotive, and that now offers support for Apple CarPlay for the first time. It is also probably the first time that iOS and Android work together neatly.

The cars of sister brand Volvo also run on Android Automotive, but do not yet have CarPlay support. We believe that this will not be long in coming.

Polestar will also support CarPlay 2

Polestar is also one of the first car brands to announce support for the next generation of Apple CarPlay. This new version not only takes over the infotainment system, but also the entire dashboard. In addition, it allows direct control of vehicle functions such as air conditioning and seat heating.

Polestar has not yet given concrete details, so it is not yet known whether this support can also be added via a software update. According to Apple, the first cars with CarPlay 2 won’t be announced until the end of 2023, so they probably won’t be on the road or at the dealership before 2024.
