Super hit Pokémon GO is already five years old but despite its age, the game still earns billions. How much?!

Pokémon GO is exactly five years old this week and Niantic is probably celebrating with lots of caviar and luxury champagne. The hit from 2016 earned billions as one of the few games in history. Even when the world was literally locked down, the Pokémon game managed to please players. Despite all that, the success of the mobile game still seems like an absolute gold mine.

Pokémon GO makes billions

Pokémon GO has raked in a staggering $5 billion since its launch in 2016. The free geolocation game about catching Pokémon is arranged in such a way that users can pay real money to buy in-game items. This appears to be extremely popular, especially in the United States, as SensorTower researched.

Of those billions, $1.9 billion was spent in America, or 36.6% of the total spending on the game. Pokémon’s home country Japan is in second place with 32% while Germany in third place accounts for 5.4% of the total spend on Incense and Pokéballs.

Niantic’s gem thus earns about a billion dollars a year, which is unprecedented in the game industry. Big guys like GTA Online struggled to hit the billion in 2020. Pokémon GO made $1.3 billion.
