The decision to lower the speed limit to 30 km/h for vehicles driving in the streets of Paris had already caused controversy. However, Anne Hidalgo has not said her last word. This time, the mayor intends to tackle the capital’s ring road, on which she intends to reserve a lane for carpooling as well as public transport. This zone, currently limited to 70 km/h, could thus increase to 50 km/h next year.

The announcement was made yesterday by François Wouts, director of roads for the City of Paris, during a debate around the project. Nevertheless, it has been mentioned for several years, in particular since Anne Hidalgo’s campaign in 2020 for the municipal elections, in anticipation of the hosting of the Olympic Games in the capital. For the moment, however, the contours of this new regulation have yet to be defined.

Thus, the town hall also plans to impose this limitation only when the lane dedicated to carpooling and public transport is “active”. As a reminder, the activation times will be from 6:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., then from 3:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. These times will apply during the week, and possibly during weekends, only on the left lane of the ring road.

In addition to the reduction in CO2 emissions made possible by such a measure, the town hall also wishes “limit the risk of accident linked to too great a difference in speed with the right-hand lanes, in particular in the event of a lane change”, report Le Parisien. The deputies also advance the fact that the median speed of cars on the ring road is already 50 km / h, even between 30 and 45 km / h in rush hour.
