It is not new, but suddenly there is a lot to do: the Japanese reality series Old Enough. In episodes averaging ten minutes, children from two to five years old are sent out to do chores. Not just any chores: very complicated chores.

Running errands, making fresh orange juice, taking clothes to the dry cleaners and doing some shopping at the fish market: not exactly tasks you would give your toddler, especially not on their own. Nevertheless, Japanese parents send their offspring on those missions. And surprisingly it often works quite well.

chatter

Perhaps the best thing about the episodes is that the children wear a microphone. You hear a lot of chatter, especially to himself, trying to remember the complicated task. Meanwhile, you hear commentary from a Japanese comedian.

Security team

The children are not helped with their chores, but they are not completely alone. To ensure safety, the toddlers are monitored by a security team disguised as gardeners, supermarket visitors and passers-by.

hit series

Old Enough was first broadcast in 1990 and is very popular in Japan. In recent years, a three-hour special has been broadcast twice a year. Season 1 of the hit series is now available on Netflix.
