Online dating fraudsters are stealing more and more money

Make sure your dream partner doesn’t turn into a nightmare: online dating fraud is becoming more and more common.

Online dating: That too is an alternative to meeting people in real places these days. You start to hear more and more stories from people who have a nice relationship or even ‘the one’ from swiping on Tinder and/or alternatives. Unfortunately, this also applies to virtual love: love is blind.

Fraud Online Dating

The Center for Crime Prevention and Security (CCV) has noticed that there is a significant increase in the number of scams via online dating. Not only are there more victims, more and more money is being knocked out of victims’ pockets. It concerned 544 reports in 2021 and the hardest hit cost the person in question almost 30,000 euros.

Fall for it

How is that possible? As said, love is blind. A person (the fraudster) will commit the online dating fraud by creating a fake profile and trying to seduce you. They don’t think they are dealing with scammers, because there are like the better catfishers use is made of fake photos and fake videos. You’ve fallen for it before you know it and that’s all the more annoying because it also turns out that your true love was one big lie.

Campaign

The only way to combat it is to spread the risks of online dating through a campaign. This campaign was set up by the CCV and is supported by the Fraud Helpdesk, Victim Support Netherlands and the Ministry of Justice and Security. The campaign seeks to notify people through ads in the Tinder and Lexa app, as well as on Instagram and Facebook. So don’t fall for it! (via De Telegraaf)
