The latest version of iOS has quite a few new features. Some of them are completely new and there are also some that seem to come from Android. Apple copied these iOS 17 features from Android.

1. Standby mode

The most striking of the new iOS 17 functions that we know from Android is the Standby mode. If you charge your iPhone and place it horizontally, the screen turns into a full-screen clock that is also easy to read from a greater distance.

Android has a similar feature called Pixel Stand. With this function, you can use a Google Pixel as a photo frame, a media player, or an alarm clock with a sunrise alarm. The Pixel Stand also doubles as a stand and wireless charger sold separately.

2. Live Voicemail

Live VoiceMail is also one of the new iOS 17 features we know from Android. This function means that when someone leaves your voicemail, you will see this appear live as text on your screen. You can then decide to record at any time. It is not yet known whether this function will also be available in the Netherlands.

This feature is very similar to the Call Screen feature on Pixel devices. The Google Assistant takes over the conversation and you receive a live transcript of the response. Call Screen is also only available in a limited number of countries.

3. Download offline maps

This is one of the iOS 17 features that has been available on Android for years. Downloading offline maps in advance is useful if you’re going on holiday abroad or just don’t want to use too much data. With the arrival of iOS 17, this is finally possible in Apple Maps.

iOS 17 features Android doesn’t have yet

There are also features appearing in iOS 17 that Android should take a closer look at. Here are the best iOS 17 features that are brand new:

  • NameDrop: This iOS 17 feature makes it even easier to share contacts. You do this by holding two iPhones together – or an iPhone and an Apple Watch (Apple Watch support will follow).
  • Check in: The Messages app is getting a Check in feature. When you activate ‘Check in’, friends or relatives will automatically receive a notification as soon as you have reached a destination.
  • Mental health: The Health and Mindfulness apps help you gain a better understanding of your overall mental well-being. In addition, there are standardized questionnaires that help to estimate your risk of anxiety or depression.
  • Diary: The Diary app in iOS 17 is a journaling app for tracking your daily thoughts, activities, and goals. The Diary app uses AI to help you with topics to write about.
