OnePlus shares future for itself and OxygenOS

OnePlus held a closed (digital) meeting where Pete Lau gave a presentation, and there was also room to answer questions. DroidApp was present, so we can update you on the plans of OnePlus and those of OxygenOS.

Vision of OnePlus for the short term

During a private round-the-table conversation with Pete Lau and a number of OnePlus employees, the OnePlus CEO opened up about the company’s short-term vision. DroidApp was present at the call. Not only was OnePlus itself provided some information, there was also room for questions, of which we have highlighted the most important.

Numbers

First of all (proudly) the figures were presented on the sales of the Chinese manufacturer. In 2021, 11 million smartphones were sold by the manufacturer. No figures are shared about which model was sold the most. The company does share the milestone of 10 million Nord devices that have been sold to date (so not just in 2021). It is not surprising that OnePlus continues with the success story, where we recently published the OnePlus Nord CE 2 review.

OnePlus 10 Pro

At the moment, the OnePlus 10 Pro has only been presented for the Chinese market. It is no secret that the phone is also coming to Europe, but now there is some more information about it. The OnePlus 10 Pro for Europe (and therefore also the Netherlands) will be announced at the end of March. There is no mention of other models in this series, so for the time being there is nothing to report about the OnePlus 10 or any other variant.

The infamous bend test of the OnePlus 10 Pro was also discussed, in which it emerged that the new smartphone would break very easily. Pete Lau is aware of the video’s existence and said it was forwarded internally for review. He indicates that a device must pass several extensive tests before it is released. It does not seem that anything will be adjusted to the design of the smartphone.

OnePlus 8 Pro vs Oppo Find X2 Pro

oppo

Oppo and OnePlus have been growing closer to each other for a long time. After all, they belong to the same parent company, but OnePlus will not disappear, says Lau. Both manufacturers have their own proposition, target group and different segments in which they work. That is why they continue to target their own market separately from each other. Personal note: this kite doesn’t quite go up. The OnePlus Nord CE 2 and the recently announced Oppo Find X5 Lite are identical to each other. Despite the fact that the Oppo is more than a hundred euros more expensive, it is immediately available with Android 12.

OxygenOS

Many posts have been about OxygenOS lately. OnePlus’ own skin will apparently be combined with Oppo’s ColorOS. Fans of OnePlus are particularly concerned about whether it can maintain its own identity. OnePlus says it has changed course after feedback from the community. It will not bundle ColorOS and OxygenOS, but will remain two branded features. However, both skins will be built on the same codebase. The new version of the skin, OxygenOS 13, is being realized together with the OnePlus Community and Google. There will be exclusive personalization options. It is not shared exactly how this collaboration with Google works. It would be about the design and privacy, but further details are not shared, according to OnePlus as it is under development.

OnePlus Nord CE 5G notifications

Product category

Expansion is coming for the product categories. Where we already see smartwatches and smartphones, just like headsets, it is quite possible that we can expect more products. Given that Oppo has already shown a foldable smartphone, it seems that OnePlus will also come with a foldable smartphone. In addition, there is a rumor in the air that there may be a tablet from the manufacturer in the pipeline. OnePlus indicates that nothing can be said about this right now, but we should get more information about this soon.

Further this year

Earlier, the roadmap for 2022 was leaked with the plans of OnePlus. What OnePlus is working on right now is charging your phone even faster. Work is being done on a technique that makes 150W fast charging possible. It is now unclear when we will see this in the OnePlus devices. It is clear that another interesting announcement will be planned in the second quarter of 2022. Then OnePlus will present their cheapest 5G smartphone so far. Details will be announced ‘soon’. Since the OnePlus Nord CE (1st generation) came on the market for 299 euros, another device will be placed below in terms of price range. It is possible that we will be dealing with a new Nord device here, but given the positioning it seems small that this will be the OnePlus Nord 2.
