OMT advises longer Christmas holidays again, but Hugo de Jonge objects
By bringing the Christmas holidays forward by a week, the OMT hopes that children will remain more in their ‘own family bubble’.
Bringing up the Christmas holidays
If the cabinet adopts the measure, the Christmas holidays will not start on December 24, but on December 17. The number of corona infections among children is high, so the OMT hopes to limit the risk of infections during Christmas dinner with this measure. Outgoing minister Hugo de Jonge is not in favor. ‘A week more vacation means a week less school and that is not desirable in a situation of learning disadvantages,’ he responds. He is also afraid of contamination if children go on trips and therefore come into contact with other children.

Arrange childcare
For many parents, a longer holiday means: arranging childcare. And that is not nearly so easy. ‘Of course this shelter should not be placed with the grandparents’, according to the OMT, because you certainly do not want to infect that vulnerable group. The advice also calls for extra attention to be paid to the care of children of parents with crucial professions. Next Tuesday the cabinet will look again at the corona measures.
