Not in the mood for a queue? These are the black Saturdays of this summer

Going on holiday by car this summer? Try to avoid the infamous black Saturdays, this way you avoid unnecessarily long traffic jams. So tasty! But by no means only Saturdays are busy. We list all the busy days for you.

The ANWB makes handy timetables showing busy days in different countries. The days are marked as ‘busy’, ‘very busy’ and ‘highly busy’. They also indicate in which direction the crowds are expected.

In the Netherlands itself, Friday 1 July and Friday 9 July are considered busy days. And then of course especially in a southerly direction.

Belgium

Passing through Belgium or is this your final destination? Then take into account more busy days than you would expect. All Saturdays in July and August are marked as busy days. So the most important lesson is: leave on a day other than Saturday, that will save you a lot of hassle.

On July 2, 9 and 16, the crowds are expected in the direction of the south (the way there), but on July 30 and August 6, 13, 20 and 27 in both the direction of the north and the south.

Also good to know: 21 July and 15 August are national holidays in Belgium. So check carefully whether shops, restaurants or other activities are open.

France

Travelers to France have other days to watch out for. Saturday 2 and 9 July are the first busy days of the summer holidays. Wednesday 13 and Thursday 14 July are also busy, as the 14th is the most important holiday in France.

Then follow a series of busy days, with even a few days of peak crowds. Do you have the opportunity? Then drive as much as possible during the week, then you drive between the busy days. Below an overview:

Monday 15 August is also a National Day in France, so keep this in mind in your planning. Shops, restaurants and attractions may be closed.

September 3rd is the last busy day on the road in France. It is then busy in the direction of the north.

Germany

It is also nice and busy on the road in Germany. Here too, the advice applies to travel during the week if you have that option. Saves on crowds, heat and whining children in the back seat…
