Why Apple should release an iPhone 14 mini this fall

The rumors seem to confirm it. There will be no iPhone 14 mini on the market. In this article, we’ll explain why we think Apple might need to reconsider that choice.

‘No iPhone 14 mini in autumn 2022’

In recent months, we heard that the iPhone 14 mini has not made it to the lineup of new devices. Many sources report that since the iPhone 12, the mini version of Apple’s phone has been selling poorly. The iPhone 13 mini would then be the last 5.4-inch iPhone.

We think this is bad news. The iPhone 14 mini might not sell very well in theory, but there are plenty of people who swear by small phones.

Why a small flagship isn’t a bad idea

After the alleged poor sales of the iPhone 13 mini, Apple is said to be offering a second larger iPhone this year, according to many rumors. We already know the 6.1-inch iPhone 14 and the 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro. In addition to the iPhone 14 Pro Max, there will be a ‘normal’ 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max. So we miss the mini model. We regret this for the following three reasons.

1. A mini fits in your pocket and is (sometimes) nicer to use

Let’s start with the most obvious; an iPhone 14 mini fits in (almost) everyone’s pocket. With only models of 6.1 inches or larger (that’s almost 15 centimeters high) you can be sure that part of your phone will stick out of your pocket. This is especially the case with women’s trousers, which generally have smaller pockets. Ideal for pickpockets.

In addition, not everyone has to walk around with a ‘monster’ of a telephone in his pocket. A wallet and a few keys are enough for the extra weight you have to carry around with you every day.

On top of that, not everyone has the same long fingers. Since it is the rule of thumb that you should be able to operate your phone with one hand, it is up to the manufacturer to realize this. If your thumb is just a little smaller than the average thumb, you should be taking a little too much effort to lower the control panel. With intensive use, this quickly feels like a game of thumb wrestling.

2. An iPhone 14 mini can be the entry-level model in terms of price

The iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 mini were the cheapest of the four flagships of their year. They turned out to be a lot more expensive than the SE model, but on the other hand they have a renewed design. For a smaller price you can still enjoy the best specifications (except for a large ProMotion screen), but you do not pay the main price.

In other words, some Apple fans want the best of the best, but simply can’t afford it. The 200/300 euro cheaper variant of the flagships are the outcome for some.

Add to that the fact that the entire iPhone 14 series will probably be disappointing in terms of price this fall. Delivery problems, high gas prices and the aftermath of corona mean that the iPhone 14 is likely to be more expensive than its predecessors. It is all the more logical that a cheaper flagship comes on the market.

3. The iPhone SE 2022 was (a bit) disappointing

Although the iPhone SE 2022 was announced with a lot of spectacle by Apple at the beginning of this year, we have to say that this bugdet phone has left a bit of a nasty aftertaste after many tests. Yes, it’s true, the phone is compact and has the best specifications. Yet after just six months, we still stumble over the outdated design.

In fact, the phone has been reduced to iOS 16 beta test phone by our editors. A new iPhone 14 mini would somewhat fill this gap. However, we believe it is more likely that Apple will introduce a new, cheaper iPhone in the spring of 2023 that will replace the iPhone SE 2022 with a modern design. In that case we are also very satisfied.
