New Nvidia graphics cards are said to be facing a huge problem

The power consumption of graphics cards has continued to rise over the past few years – but the biggest leap in power consumption could still be ahead. According to an insider, the RTX-4000 graphics cards from Nvidia are real power hogs.

If you want to buy a new graphics card, you have to dig deep into your pocket. The prices have been rising again for a few months – and that, although already in autumn 2022 the next generation of GPUs is just around the corner.

At the moment, details about the RTX 4000 and RX 7000 are still few and far between, but the well-known hardware leaker Greymon55 has now found out interesting information about Nvidia’s next flagship, the GeForce RTX 4090. He assumes that the top GPU will be a real power hog and a TDP of 550 watts achieved. For comparison: the current top model, the RTX 3090, has a TDP of 350 watts, the consumption of the 2080 Ti was 250 watts at the time.

If Greymon55’s assumption turns out to be true, it might offend some PC gamers. Because with such a high power consumption, the difference would also increase at the end of the year clearly noticeable on the electricity bill.

In addition, it should not be forgotten that the heat development would also increase due to the increased power consumption. In other words: The graphics card will be much harder to cool and could additionally heat up your premises in summer.

AMD graphics cards will also use more

But not only the new Nvidia graphics cards could become real power guzzlers in the next generation. Greymon55 assumes that AMD’s top models could also land at a TDP of around 500 watts. For many PC players, a change of the power supply unit should then be necessary at the latest.

But it will take a while before that happens. It is currently assumed that Nvidia’s RTX 4000 graphics cards will be launched in October 2022, AMD’s new models should be in stores in early 2023. It remains to be seen whether the new GPUs will then be available at the MSRP, or whether prices will skyrocket again thanks to the chip crisis and scalpers.
