After just one year, the rethinking follows: Toyota is reportedly rethinking its electric car plans. Upcoming models should be produced more cheaply and be more powerful. According to an insider, this could lead to delays in some models.

Toyota is changing its electric car plans

In December 2021, Toyota announced that it would invest around 30 billion euros in the development of a total of 30 purely electric cars. The Toyota bZ4X was only mentioned as the beginning of a long-term strategy. As it turns out, just a year after the announcement another rethink took place. According to reports based on statements by an anonymous insider, Toyota wants to align itself more closely with the competition from Tesla and BYD.

Upcoming e-cars from Toyota should get more power on the road, than originally planned. The Japanese carmaker also wants to pay more attention to efficiency when it comes to production costs. Toyota apparently wants to make the change of strategy public at the beginning of next year when the carmaker sits down with suppliers.

According to the insider, the new strategy could also happen in the next three years in particular negative impact on already planned models to have. Toyota cannot currently guarantee that these will come onto the market as planned (source: Asia Financial). Work on some of the planned electric cars is said to have been paused or stopped altogether. The e-TNGA architecture, which is only three years old, may also be abandoned. Toyota has not yet officially commented on this.

Toyota: BYD more than a competitor

The Chinese car manufacturer BYD is apparently not only seen as an e-competitor at Toyota. Instead, even deeper cooperation should be sought, as reports suggest. In a first step, an e-car from Toyota is to be launched in China BYD batteries are used.
