Need screen time during the Christmas holidays? This is what you think

Opinions differ.

  • Danique: ‘Screen time, such a word that gives you the creeps. We don’t do it. TV is on almost all day here. Just background noise. Kids are so used to it. That they are more often just playing with toys, doing crafts or being outside.’
  • Tamara: ‘We don’t have fixed screen times anyway. I prefer to make our children aware of their responsibilities and the use of free time themselves. Their whole life is spent on that screen, mail, chatting, school and work schedules, games, Netflix, etc. I use it a lot myself. But we prefer to stick to fixed moments when we don’t use a screen, such as during dinner or when we play games together at the table.’
  • Bianca: ‘Everyone should know that for themselves. I don’t give a damn about it.’
  • Marieke: ‘Good, and certainly not with that extra week. My 9 year old son is flying up against the walls at home. It’s a holiday, bad weather, we can and may not do much, we’re just going to make the best of it, whatever it takes.’

‘Help, how do I deal with my child’s media use?’ >

  • Sonja: ‘Our son has his own (children’s) tablet and can regularly watch movies or play games. He’s almost 4. He’s also learning a lot from it, so don’t just think it’s bad. He also eats well when he watches movies during dinner, so we easily grab that thing too. And as long as he does enough other things, we don’t see any problems.’
  • Sandra: ‘We had a strict screen time until the first lockdown, but then we let go very quickly. But I do make sure that it doesn’t get too crazy and I also make sure that there are days in between with very little screen time.’
  • Kim: ‘Screen time? He’s lucky if he gets to watch TV. And if it is allowed, then only when his sister is asleep. Didn’t watch TV for the first 2 years anyway. Having fun is much better for them. And playing games together is also more fun now that he is 5.’
  • Irene: ‘Here it is. Just a fixed rhythm where the TV can be turned on at 5 p.m. The rest of the time playing nice, going outside and meeting friends.’
