Is your child going to daycare soon, because it allows him to play with other children or simply because it is more convenient from a logistical point of view? Then the question is what kind of childcare suits your child best. Because there are quite a few different options.

Wondering what choices you have? Check the list below.

Nursery or daycare

Day care or crèche is perhaps the best-known form of care in the Netherlands. This is a playful environment where children can play all day long. It is good for your child’s social contacts, because they can also play with other children.

Parent participation nursery

The parent participation crèche, what does that mean? It means that different parents in the area babysit each other’s children. This can be done, for example, with the children of friends or family. This way you always have a babysitter that you trust and know. The only thing is that you also have to look after someone else’s children from time to time, so you have to have time for that and feel like it.

Childminder

If you prefer a small home care, you can opt for a childminder. They are groups consisting of a maximum of 6 children together. The childminder takes care of the children at home, together with their own children. You can find a childminder by visiting a childminder agency or by asking around in your area.

Family members

Your kids probably love grandpa and grandma, and vice versa, of course. Although not every grandparent wants to look after the grandchildren. Do family members like it? Then hire them as a babysitter. If this is well organized and done in good faith, this can be a very nice and flexible childcare.

Au pair

An au pair may sound luxurious, but if you have a busy life, it is sometimes a nice solution. An au pair lives in your home and can therefore also take on household chores. Au pairs can be found through various organizations.

Babysitter at home

You can also choose to have a babysitter come to your home, this is also called a nanny. The difference with an au pair is that a nanny does not live in your house. It’s a convenient solution as you don’t have to take your kids anywhere. There are several agencies that can help you find a suitable babysitter. Do you only need a helping hand at night, for example because you work night shifts? Then choose a night nanny.

Bonus

In the Netherlands you can receive childcare allowance for an approved childcare. Check here if your shelter is included. Please note: you cannot apply for childcare allowance for lunchtime care (TSO). From 2023, childcare will become considerably more expensive, and the allowance will not grow with it.
