‘My toddler spooned down a dollop of wasabi in one go’

Saturday night was sushi night for Kaya and me for a long time. A real feast: I enjoyed the well-filled maki rolls, Kaya enjoyed the cucumber maki, soybeans and mini spring rolls.

The green wasabi on my plate has always caught Kaya’s attention, but—although the Internet is full of videos of parents feeding their child wasabi “in jest”—I didn’t hesitate to let her taste it.

‘Mom!’

You must have just got Kaya, because the moment I walked from the table to the kitchen to get a drink, she climbed on her high chair and grabbed the wasabi that was on the table with spoon and all. I didn’t realize anything myself. Until I heard a deafening cry, followed by a panicked ‘Mommy!’

Milk

I burst into the dining room and immediately saw that Kaya had taken a big bite. Fortunately, she spit it out right away and the spicy taste soon diminished after a glass of milk. But will Kaya ever ask for wasabi on our sushi date again? I doubt it…
