Motorola ThinkPhone official: business phone with powerful specs

Motorola wants to become a new player in the business smartphone market with its new ThinkPhone. The phone has many integrations with the ThinkPad laptops and Motorola also offers the necessary tools so that IT administrators can easily set up and update the devices remotely. The ThinkPhone is supported extra long.

Motorola ThinkPhone

In honor of the thirtieth anniversary of the ThinkPad business laptops, Motorola – a subsidiary brand of Lenovo – comes with the first ThinkPhone. The device has high-end specifications and features aimed at business use, according to a press release.

Motorola and Lenovo expect employees to use the ThinkPhone in conjunction with the ThinkPad laptops. The ThinkPhone therefore comes with a number of integrations. This way, your phone and laptop are automatically linked if they use the same Wi-Fi network. The devices also share their clipboard so you can easily copy text from your laptop into an email on your phone and vice versa.

Smart ThinkPad integrations

You can also stream your phone’s apps on a ThinkPad, but Motorola also goes a step further. Phone notifications also appear on your laptop and if you tap such a notification, the correct app will be streamed on your laptop. You can also easily transfer files between your phone and laptop and Motorola has also made it extra easy to use the ThinkPhone as a hotspot for the ThinkPad.

Video conferencing has become important for many jobs and the ThinkPhone can help with that too. It can use its 50 megapixel main camera as an extra good webcam for the ThinkPad.

Red Key and Ready For

In addition, there is also the ‘Red Key’. That is a button on the side that you can set for many different purposes. For example, to open an important app such as Microsoft Word or your mailbox, but you can also use it to activate a specific function of your phone. In time, there will also be special integrations for Microsoft services in combination with the Red Key. For example, Motorola already mentions an integration in Microsoft Teams, with which you can use the Red Key as a walkie-talkie function to communicate with your team.

In addition, there is also a well-known Motorola function that is used for the ThinkPhone. If you don’t have a laptop or PC at hand for a while, you can use your ThinkPhone as a desktop thanks to ‘Ready For’. You connect it wirelessly to a monitor or television and then you can open apps side by side in windows. It is also possible to use a mouse or keyboard together with the phone.

Security and IT management

The Motorola ThinkPhone comes with a security chip called the ‘Moto SafeKey’. It forms an extra layer of security to protect your passwords, tokens and PINs. It is a second processor that works independently of the chipset. The ThinkPhone was also equipped with the new Moto Secure app, which is an app that bundles all privacy and security related functions. This ranges from settings for the lock screen, to all kinds of warnings for the user.

Corporate IT administrators also receive additional tools to set up the ThinkPhone and all other Motorola devices. Motorola is launching the services ‘Moto OEMConfig’ and ‘Moto Device Manager’ for this purpose.

Robust housing

But the ThinkPhone has more to offer than functions for business use, because it is also a sturdy phone with powerful specifications. The housing has a military grade of protection (MIL STD 810H), because the phone is made with extra sturdy aluminum, among other things. With his Gorilla Glass Victus he can survive a fall of up to 1.25 meters.

The device has also received an IP68 certification for water resistance. In other words, it can survive for half an hour in a depth of 1.5 meters.

Extra long support

The phone has a relatively large 6.6-inch Full HD OLED screen. Under the hood is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and that chipset is assisted by 8 or 12 GB of RAM and 128 GB, 256 or 512 GB of storage. The ThinkPhone supports dual SIM, but it does not have a built-in e-SIM.

Motorola also creates expectations when it comes to the battery. With its 5,000 mAh battery, it can be used for up to 36 hours, according to the brand. The battery of the ThinkPhone should last longer than the average smartphone battery. The battery supports 1,200 charge cycles, compared to the 800 cycles of most phones. The ThinkPhone comes with a 68W fast charger. Motorola also wants to support the ThinkPhone for an extra long time with four years of security updates and three version updates. Out of the box you can use it with Android 13.
