Most children do not receive an increase in pocket money, despite inflation

Grocery prices are (still) through the roof. But not only our purchasing power is falling, also that of children. They can buy less and less with their pocket money. Nevertheless, there is usually no question of an increase in pocket money, according to research by the finance platform PorteRenee.nl.

Since the sky-high prices, only 6 percent of parents give more pocket money. 2 percent gives less pocket money, for example because they have less money due to inflation. The majority of parents (60 percent) do not apply an increase in pocket money. 30 percent of parents do not (yet) give their child pocket money.

Less purchasing power

According to Renee Lamboo, founder of PorteRenee, many parents don’t think twice about giving their child more pocket money because of inflation. “A child has lost tens of percent of purchasing power in this way and sees in the store that he can buy much less for the same pocket money. If you have the financial space – that is of course a condition – I would certainly discuss this at home.”

Learn to negotiate

The fact that they have less to spend due to inflation is no reason for most children to ask for more pocket money. Only 14 percent of parents say that their child has asked for an increase in pocket money. Negotiating about pocket money is often not an option, while according to Renee you can’t start early enough. “Let them make a proposal for an increase in pocket money in line with inflation, with good arguments. From about eight years old, they can figure that out very well,” she says. “In this way, you straighten out your child’s loss of purchasing power and teach him/her/them to stand up for themselves financially. That will help them a lot later!”
