lower your carbon footprint and become an Earth Hero

The climate needs our help. Not tomorrow, not next year: today. You will not have missed the forest fires in Greece and Turkey, as well as the floods in Limburg, Belgium and Germany. Every step you take to lower your carbon footprint can have an impact on our living environment. What can you do? Read along and become an Earth Hero.

Earth Hero: Climate Change

Never before has climate change been so visible, and this seems like just the beginning. It is impossible to estimate what the world will look like in 10 years. It is clear, however, that the current damage cannot be removed. CO2 does not disappear from our atmosphere. Fortunately, the tide can still be turned by taking actions that reduce our impact on the earth, which can slow down the speed at which our living environment changes. They are often simple things, but sometimes you just need a stimulus for that. Earth Hero: Climate Change, the app of the week, is that incentive.

Before you can use the app, you must create an account with Earth Hero. Earth Hero stores in this account, among other things, the statistics of your climate emissions and the actions you took to reduce your carbon footprint. After your account has been created, Earth Hero will ask a number of questions to calculate your CO2 emissions. To conclude these questions, you will see a graph with your own CO2 emissions on the left, in the middle the average of the Dutch or Belgians and on the right you see the average emissions of a world citizen.

That is the starting point for your CO2 footprint. However, it does not necessarily have to be accurate. If you want to adjust the data to get a (more) accurate representation of your CO2 footprint – click directly on the My Progress tab and choose Refine my emissions profile. Earth Hero is now set: time to discover climate action.

Lower your carbon footprint

Under the Actions tab you will find all kinds of actions to reduce your CO2 footprint, for example by installing solar panels on your roof, or by purchasing used items – such as a refurbished telephone. An expected impact on your carbon footprint is shown for each action. For those who are just starting to reduce their carbon footprint, it is important to pay attention to the difficulty of actions. Rather start with the small actions, such as removing your old energy-guzzling lamps.

Such actions are less impactful, but every action counts. Every action that reduces your carbon footprint helps save our climate. For convenience, in the Actions tab, you can also let the app sort actions based on the expected impact. This way you can ensure that actions with a lower impact, which you can perform more easily, are placed at the top of the page.

What should not be forgotten in Earth Hero is the option to set your own climate goal. At the top of the home screen, you will find the option to set targets for reducing your climate impact. Earth Hero advised me to reduce my carbon footprint by 10 percent annually to meet the Paris climate goals (climate neutral by 2050). All actions taken from the list in Earth Hero will be deducted from your current emissions. Every year you can see whether you have succeeded in reducing your climate impact.
