KPN and Vodafone see data usage rise to record levels during the New Year’s night
KPN and Vodafone have released the figures on the use of the mobile network during the turn of the year 2020-2021. Mobile data usage increases every year, but it has never been measured like this before.

This morning we already wrote about the new WhatsApp record during the turn of the year. Telecom providers KPN and Vodafone have also released figures on the use of the provider’s mobile (and fixed) network. KPN says the following; The fixed network peaked at 4:00 PM, with extensive use of the Internet and watching videos on streaming services. After midnight, data traffic doubled due to sharing videos, photos and calling.
KPN announces that a new record has been set during the turn of the year. A record use of 248 terabytes on the mobile network was measured between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. This is the highest increase in 10 years and considerably higher than last year’s consumption; when this amounted to 196 terabytes. For the mobile network, the peak time was measured between 0:00 am and 0:05 am, with Vodafone this peak time was until 0:15 am. VodafoneZiggo saw a data usage of 185TB on Vodafone’s mobile network between 22:00 and 04:00. This is an increase of 28 percent compared to last year. The increase was less than last year, when 57 percent more customer data was processed.
Texting is becoming less and less popular, KPN reports. Vodafone does not provide any further figures, but KPN sent 1.8 million text messages (previously 2.4 million). Calls via the mobile network also decreased compared to previous years. At the last turn of the year that came to 4.1 million, this year it was 3.8 million.
T-Mobile has not shared any figures on mobile usage.
