Kirsten Schilder: ‘What I often think, but hardly say…’

Photography: Kee & Kee

Kirsten Schilder (39) is a columnist for Kek Mama. She is married to singer Nick Schilder and mother of Nikki (12), Julian (10) and Jackie (5).

The nice thing about an open kitchen? That, while baking cookies or unloading the dishwasher (there are also less fun chores), you can catch cute moments. This is how Jackie of the week passed loudly singing: “Hand in the pot who loves me!” Julian, just back from soccer practice, looked up from the couch in dismay, hesitated for a moment whether he should stay seated… but stood up anyway and walked over to his sister.

Jackie opened her arms and beamed at her brother. She gave him one of her biggest hugs and said, “June, I love you too.” Quasi-casually, but with a small smile on his face, Julian shuffled back to the sofa. “Mom, Julian likes me too!” cried Jackie, happy with the confirmation she got from her brother. Intensely satisfied, she picked up her markers and notebook and began to draw.

I think you’re sweet

The brother-sister scene got me thinking. I think you’re sweet; when have I looked into my mother’s, aunt’s or friends’ eyes and told them that I am happy when I see them, happy when I hear their voice on the phone and cherished because we have those beautiful conversations? I hardly ever say that to the people who are so close to me. While it’s so heartwarming and simple, my kids just showed it!

“Especially to the people who are close to me, I hardly say that”

Yes, once I email this column I will send my full inner circle a sweet message. Maybe two, so that the message gets across. And when I see my loved ones, I give them an extra tight hug. And you, dear reader, I would like to let you know that you mean a lot to me!
