iPhone battery is yellow – this is what you need to do

Have you ever wondered why your iPhone’s battery icon is sometimes yellow and sometimes green? iPhoned explains it for you.

Read on after the ad.

The question about the yellow or green icon is actually answered very quickly. The yellow icon indicates Energy Saving mode is active, the green icon is normal mode. We show you how to easily switch between the two modes and what the advantage of such a yellow battery is.

iPhone battery yellow – that’s what it means

As mentioned, the yellow icon represents Power Saving Mode, which can extend your iPhone’s battery life. This is achieved because the operating system refreshes in the background, automatic mail retrieval and other iOS functions temporarily stop – by default until the iPhone is charged back to 80 percent.

You usually activate the power saving mode accidentally when the battery charge drops below 20 percent. When this happens, a low power alert appears. If you tap the notification (too) quickly, you usually immediately activate the yellow battery symbol. And you will continue to do so until you have charged the battery to 80 percent again. After that, Energy Saving Mode will be turned off automatically.

This is how you switch off the yellow battery

Don’t want to wait that long? You can also manually turn off power save mode if you want to continue using all system functions.

  1. First, pick up your iPhone and open the Settings app;
  2. Scroll down a bit and tap ‘Battery’;
  3. Slide the switch next to “Energy Saving Mode” to the left to turn it off.

Alternatively, you can put Power Saving Mode in the Control Center. To do this, open ‘Settings’ again, but then go to ‘Control panel’. Now tap the plus sign next to “Energy Saving Mode”. Now when you open Control Center with a swipe down from the top right (or bottom up on home button iPhones), you’ll find the battery icon for power saving mode. Tap it to activate or deactivate it.

How much longer will your iPhone battery last with a yellow battery?

When Energy Saving Mode is active, your iPhone’s battery will last a little longer. How much longer, that depends on which model of iPhone you have. In general, the older your iPhone, the more it will benefit from Power Saving Mode. An iPhone 8 often lasts a few hours longer, while an iPhone 14 hardly notices a difference.

When in doubt, the following rule applies: do you want to get the most out of your iPhone battery? Turn your iPhone’s battery yellow by activating Power Saving Mode. Did you know that this is now also possible on the Apple Watch?
