iPhone 13 gets new feature that has been available for Android for 11 years jaar

The iPhone 13, the new upcoming top device from Apple, will work with an always-on screen for the first time, according to rumors. It also gets an LTPO screen, a more fuel-efficient panel with variable refresh rate.

iPhone with always on screen

In the fall, Apple will introduce its new iPhone, and the series is expected to be called ‘iPhone 13’. According to a Bloomberg newsletter, Apple will provide its smartphones with an always-on screen for the first time. This is a feature that keeps the screen always on so that notifications and the time are always displayed. Usually we see an always-on screen on phones with an OLED screen, because the consumption is lower compared to LCD screens.

Although iPhones have been working with an OLED screen for years, the iPhone 13 will only be the first to work with the functionality, iCulture writes. You have been able to use an always-on screen for years on Android phones. Think, for example, of the round QuickCircle screen of the LG G3 from 2013 that worked together with a corresponding case, and the Moto X from that same year already had it.

Nokia N86

Remarkably enough, it is not an Android phone that first demonstrated the function, but a phone from Nokia, the N86. That was a device from 2019 that then ran on Symbian, Nokia’s own operating system. Nokia phones ran on that proprietary system before the company threw in the towel and sold its phone division to Microsoft. Later, the Lumia devices started working with an always-on screen.

LTPO screen

The iPhone 13 adopts another technology that we already know, this time from Android devices, namely the LTPO screen. That stands for ‘low temperature polycrystalline oxide’. An LTPO display can dynamically adjust its refresh rate depending on battery life. This way a phone can save energy.

We saw this technology for the first time in the Samsung Galaxy Note 20, a flagship from the autumn of 2020. Apple buys its OLED panels from Samsung Display and can therefore also offer an LTPO screen in its iPhone. Do you use your phone’s always-on screen?
